Job description

To serve and supervise the serving of breakfast, lunch and snacks to preschool children by preparing food according to approved cycle menus, following guidelines and regulations established by Child Care Food Program, Head Start, DHEC and SC Day Care License.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Ensure adherence to Child Care Food Program guidelines, Head Start Performance guidelines, DHEC and SC Day Care License regulations.

2. Plan and maintain kitchen inventory for food and nonfood. Prepare food and non food orders needed to prepare meals according to menus.

3. Ensure kitchen staff follows approved menus and that classrooms are provided with items and food for modified family-style service. Ensure all diet restrictions are followed as food is prepared.

4. Receive stock and help employees check orders against invoices and food orders. Ensure First In First Out (FIFO) stocking method is used.

5. Maintain appropriate accounting and administrative documentation, such as meal count records, kitchen inventory, food orders and vehicle logs. Monitor milk inventories daily and monthly.

6. Ensure temperatures of refrigerators, freezers and milk coolers are taken early morning and posted; stoves, and appliances are turned off and equipment is working correctly. Lock and secure kitchen at end of day.

7. Requisition kitchen supplies as needed.

8. Develop work schedules for staff to ensure food preparation schedules are followed and that each worker is cross trained Ensure that all workers complete on-going sanitation and education in child care food program regulations and attend all in- service training.

9. Develop cleaning schedules for kitchens and transportation vehicles.

10. Maintain the satellite kitchen according to standards.

11. Perform other related work and acquire related job skills as required by management.

Dimension: The kitchen staff and children at assigned center and those to whom food is catered.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct: Assistant Nutrition Technicians and Delivery Persons.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Minimum two years experience in quantity food service; one year experience in Child Care Facility preferred; minimum one year experience in supervision preferred.

Valid driver’s license.

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES

Kitchen equipment and appliances; calculator.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Full body agility with frequent repetitive motion with wrist and hands, reaching, pushing, pulling, stooping, lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds, exposure to extremely cold and hot conditions, ability to stand on feet minimum 90% of work day, good balance for reaching, and a sense of feel and touch.

Must wear clean clothes; rubber sole, closed toe, noncanvas shoes; hair net or cook’s hat.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Must have knowledge of operation and cleaning of all kitchen equipment, and of cycle menus.

Must have ability to communicate with a variety of people and work independently. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude towards working with other staff members.

Must exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties.

Must be able to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions. Must have good reading and interpretive skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must submit to an agency issued drug test, SLED check, and state and federal fingerprinting check.

Must have a physical exam prior to employment and every two years thereafter

Must have a tuberculin skin test prior to employment (chest X-ray for those who cannot take skin test).

Job Type: Full-time
